How To Get Your Pup Under Control
Training a service dog harness is an endeavor which requires a plethora of patience, but if done correctly is also immensely rewarding. In all my life I have known no feeling like companionship greater than that feeling I have with my two dogs. If you`re interested in learning more, read this article.
At a very young age, puppies are able to learn simple commands. If your puppy is tired, highly excited, or exploring his space, your training session will probably not be very successful. You will need your puppy`s full attention to assure your training session is worth your time.
Listening to your dog is one of the most important steps of training your dog. If your dog is uncomfortable or scared, then you aren`t going to get the result that you are looking for. Respect their needs and the process will go a lot smoother.
Young dogs can easily be trained to retreat to their crate when they are tired. When crate training your dog, always keep the crate in the vicinity of where you and the dog are interacting. When he tires from play he will naturally gravitate towards the crate because to do so doesn`t isolate him from you.
When training, be specific about what you want your dog to do. Using vague commands like \"no\" tend to be ineffective. No only tells him that you didn`t like what he did, but not why. If you say \"no\" when he jumps on the couch, he may think you wanted him to jump higher. Use specific commands like stay and sit for better results.
When crating your dog it is best to always remove their collar. Even the best designed dog crates offer the possibility of a collar becoming snagged. The result could be catastrophic. By removing your dog`s collar before you crate them you are acting to protect them from being strangled to death.
Keep in mind that everything that goes in is eventually coming back out if you house train your puppy. To help regulate your dog`s bowel movements, feed him 2-3 times per day. By scheduling your feedings, you will be able to determine when you should take your dog out. This can greatly reduce the number of accidents.
One of the first things most people teach their dogs is the sit command. This is very basic but is handy for your dog to know, especially when you want to get his attention. One way to teach your dog to sit is to take a piece of dog treat and hold it about six inches from his nose. Slowly raise the treat straight up and say \"Fido, sit\". You may have to use your hand to help him into the position until he realizes what you want.
Take a moment to try and think like he does if you want to help your dog succeed in his training program. Understanding how your pet views the world can help you make better training decisions for him. The better suited your program is to your dog`s personality, the more success you will have while training.
To make your dog understand what you are expecting from it, you should reward it when it behaves well. Pet it when it obeys you, and use a soothing voice. You can even feed your dog a treat if it did something remarkably well. Make sure your dog understands why you are pleased.
Never yell at a barking dog. While a barking dog is sure to raise your frustration level, resist the urge to yell at them. Dogs do not understand that you are yelling at them, and often associate your raised voice as you joining in the fun of barking. If your dog is barking, calmly distract them with a toy or treat, and when the barking stops, give them their prize.
Plan training activities with your dog during a time when interruptions are minimized. Training goes much faster when both you and your pet can focus on the training activities without being distracted by other activities or disturbances. A focused 15 minute session is more effective than several sessions which are interrupted by distractions.
Learn to read how your dog is feeling. You`ll be able to guess whether it is feeling nervous, agitated, aggressive, or calm, by studying your pet`s body language. You can remove it from a bad situation before a problem develops if you can predict when a dog is about to behave badly.
It is important that you get to know your dog well. Dog training is not a \"one-size-fits-all\" proposition. A lot depends on your personality and capabilities, your dog`s personality and capabilities, and how these traits mesh. Something that may work well for one trainer with one dog may not work with another trainer and another dog. Or it may not work for the same trainer with different dogs. Everyone is different!
Your dog will benefit from a solid exercise routine. Hyperactive dogs are often full of energy they have not spent elsewhere. Exercising your dog prior to training sessions will increase his attention span. Better yet, he`ll be calmer at home and less likely to react poorly to external stimulus.
To teach your dog not to chew inappropriately, be sure to provide him with plenty of appropriate things to chew. Make sure they are dog toys, not cast off human belongings. Whenever your dog begins to chew inappropriately, redirect him by giving him one of his own toys and take away the inappropriate item.
When you discipline your dog, your tone is an important factor. Dogs tend to be well in tune with how their trainers are feeling. Use a stern voice when you are correcting your dog.
To teach your dog to lie down, have him start in a sit position. Take a treat, and place your hand on the ground. Slowly drag it away from your dog. Your dog should initially lower his nose to the ground, and then lie down as he tries to follow the treat further away. If he stands up instead of lying down, have him restart from the sit position. Once he lies down make sure to praise him.
This article offers a great deal of advice that can be used to get to know dog training a little better and understand just what it takes to teach your dog new tricks no matter how old it is. You can start giving commands and getting a response, while learning the best techniques to help your dog understand new commands easier.
